NATION IN BRIEF : VIRGINIA : 4 Sailors Swept Off Ships; 2 Missing
A wave struck a freight elevator on an aircraft carrier as sailors moved missiles from one deck to another, sweeping three men and 38 missiles into the Atlantic, the Navy reported from Atlantic Fleet headquarters in Norfolk, Va. Two sailors were rescued. In the Pacific, another sailor was missing after being swept off a Navy carrier into rough seas Monday night, the Navy said. Navy planes and ships searched through the day for the missing sailors from the Dwight D. Eisenhower in the Atlantic and the Carl Vinson in the Pacific. The Vinson was 620 miles north of Wake Island and the Eisenhower was 90 miles southeast of Cape Hatteras, N.C., when the accidents occurred. The 18 Sparrow and 20 Sidewinder missiles lost in the Atlantic posed no risk, the Navy said.
