Ex-S. Carolina AD Wins Suit Over Firing
COLUMBIA, S.C. — A federal jury today agreed that former University of South Carolina Athletic Director Bob Marcum was fired unjustly and awarded him nearly $250,000 in damages.
The nine-woman, three-man jury deliberated about five hours over two days before returning its verdict shortly after noon, ending the civil trial that began Oct. 16.
Marcum said it was not the money but the principle that pleased him about the verdict.
“There’s no doubt about it,” he said. “The money’s one thing, we’ve had a lot of expenses. But the most important thing is the verdict--it restores your reputation around the country.”
The university’s attorneys left the courthouse without comment.
The jury’s decision brought to an end--albeit temporarily pending possible appeals--the battle between Marcum and the university that began March 1, 1988, when President James B. Holderman fired the athletic director.
Marcum sued the university for breach-of-contract, contending that he would have earned nearly $500,000 if his contract had been honored.
