Pierre Turgeon had a goal and two assists as the Buffalo Sabres broke Montreal’s three-game winning streak with a 4-3 victory over the Canadiens Thursday night at Montreal.

Turgeon, who set up Mike Hartman’s tiebreaking goal midway through the second period, scored at 10:35 of the third period to give the Sabres a 4-2 lead.

Montreal had a two-man advantage in the final minutes and Chris Chelios scored with 1:38 remaining, but the Canadiens were unable to get the tying goal past Sabres goalie Clint Malarchuk.

Turgeon also assisted on Dave Andreychuk’s goal while Rick Vaive also scored for Buffalo. The Sabres (8-4-1) won their third consecutive game to pull one point behind Montreal (9-7-0) for the Adams division lead.

Chicago 4, Minnesota 3--Doug Wilson scored 18 seconds into overtime as the Blackhawks overcame a three-goal deficit at Chicago for their seventh victory in eight games.

Minnesota was unable to clear its zone after the face-off at the start of overtime. Brian Noonan controlled a loose puck and sent it to Wilson, whose 50-foot slap shot beat goaltender Kari Takko.

New York Rangers 6, Quebec 1--Rookie Darren Turcotte scored a goal and assisted on three others, two by Brian Leetch, as the Rangers spoiled Michel Bergeron’s coaching return to Madison Square Garden in New York.

Bergeron, fired by the Rangers two days before the end of last season, was quickly rehired by the Nordiques, who he had coached for seven years before a stormy, two-year stint in New York that included public battles with General Manager Phil Esposito.

Under Bergeron, the Nordiques have a 3-9-1 record, worst in the NHL.

The Rangers, who have the NHL’s best record at 9-2-3, took a 1-0 lead on Turcotte’s goal 1:23 into the game and never trailed.

Pittsburgh 5, New York Islanders 2--Phil Bourque and Rob Brown scored goals 70 seconds apart in the second period at Pittsburgh to help the Penguins end a six-game winless streak.

Mario Lemieux also scored his sixth goal of the season as the Penguins stopped a 0-5-1 slide and a four-game home losing streak.
