BIG EIGHT ROUNDUP : Gundy: 429 Yards for Oklahoma State
Mike Gundy threw for 429 yards, third best passing day in Big Eight history, to lift Oklahoma State to a 37-24 victory over Kansas Saturday at Lawrence, Kan.
Gundy, the Big Eight career leader in passing and total offense, completed his first 10 passes. He finished 27 for 35 and surpassed the school single-game record by 56 yards.
He also scored twice on short runs and threw two touchdown passes as the Cowboys improved to 4-5 overall and 3-2 in the Big Eight. Kansas fell to 3-6 and 1-4.
Running back Gerald Hudson had 113 yards receiving and 106 yards rushing for the Cowboys, who have not lost at Kansas since 1968.
Safety Lance Flachsbarth intercepted a pass by Gundy in the first quarter, the only interception Gundy threw in four starts against Kansas.
Gundy was five for five in a 79-yard drive on the Cowboys’ first possession and scored on a one-yard run.
With 12:11 left in the second quarter, Gundy threw a short pass to Vernon Brown in the flat and the running back turned it into a 39-yard touchdown play. Gundy’s passing set up Cary Blanchard’s 30-yard field goal later in the second quarter.
Oklahoma 52, Missouri 14--Quarterback Steve Collins ran for 147 yards and two touchdowns, and also threw for 110 yards and a touchdown at Norman, Okla.
Collins, making his first start since breaking a finger in the second game of the season, got most of his yards by going outside on option keepers.
He had 117 yards in the first half, including touchdown runs of 11 and 14 yards, as the Sooners opened a 31-14 lead.
Ike Lewis also scored twice as Oklahoma improved to 6-3 overall and 4-1 in the Big Eight. Missouri fell to 2-7 and 1-4.
Collins had 97 of his rushing yards in the second quarter, when Oklahoma scored on all four of its possessions. The Sooners had 226 yards in the quarter, 57 more than they had in their game a week ago against Colorado. They finished with 565 yards.
Iowa State 36, Kansas State 11--Blaise Bryant, a transfer from Golden West College, rushed for 142 yards in 19 carries and scored three touchdowns in the first half, then sat out the second because of a leg injury at Ames, Iowa.
Bryant, 6-foot-1 and 200 pounds, ran 62 yards on Iowa State’s first play to start an 80-yard scoring drive and raised his season rushing total to 1,136 yards--seventh best in school history.
Bryant, a junior, had 121 yards in the first quarter and scored on runs of one, four and two yards as Iowa State improved to 4-5 overall and 2-3 in the Big Eight. Kansas State, winless in its last 24 conference games, is 1-8 and 0-5.
Bryant, who was held out of the second half after complaining of tightness in his right hamstring, ran five times for all of Iowa State’s 80 yards in its first scoring drive.
