BYU, Trailing by 19, Rallies to Beat Oregon
PROVO, Utah — When Brigham Young fell three touchdowns behind Oregon, Ty Detmer heard a voice. It reminded him about BYU’s 56-14 loss at Hawaii a week earlier.
“When I heard someone say ‘Hawaii, here we go again,’ that made me mad,” Detmer said.
BYU then scored 24 fourth-quarter points as the No. 23 Cougars rallied for a 45-41 nonconference victory Saturday.
Detmer passed for 470 yards and three touchdowns to Jeff Frandsen, including a 15-yard game-winner with 1:01 left.
The Cougars (7-2) trailed 33-14 in the third quarter after Derek Loville scored for the third time.
But Detmer threw touchdown passes of six and 26 yards to Frandsen, Jason Chaffetz kicked a 27-yard field goal and Eric Mortensen scored on a six-yard run, giving the Cougars a 38-33 lead with 5:54 left.
Oregon (5-4) rallied and went ahead 41-38 with 3:05 left on Bill Musgrave’s 15-yard touchdown pass to Terry Obee and two-point conversion to Obee.
Detmer then led BYU on a 90-yard scoring drive. Oregon’s last chance ended when tackle Bud Orr sacked Musgrave and knocked the ball free. Tim Adams recovered the fumble and the Cougars ran out the clock.
Musgrave and Detmer combined for 959 yards passing, breaking the NCAA record of 926 for two quarterbacks, set by Shane Montgomery of North Carolina State and Duke’s Steve Slayden in 1987.
The Ducks took a 19-14 halftime lead on two three-yard scoring runs by Loville and a 40-yard field goal by Gregg McCallum. Obee caught a 10-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter and Loville followed with a one-yard touchdown run. Musgrave finished with 489 yards, completing 26 of 44 passes.
Detmer, who entered the game second in total offense with a 368-yard-per-game average, completed 29 of 47 passes.
