Hearing Scheduled on Proposed Bicycle ‘Freeway’
A public hearing is scheduled for Tuesday on a proposed two-mile elevated bikeway that would lead into UCLA and Westwood Village.
Officials from the Los Angeles County Department of Public Works will present the results of an environmental impact report and seek comments from the community.
The long-dreamed-of West L.A. Veloway, a four-lane bicycle “freeway” that would be elevated for most of its length, has been under environmental review for six years.
According to Ryan Snyder, executive director of Citizens for the West L.A. Veloway, the report released Oct. 7 concluded that there was no significant impact that could not be mitigated.
The veloway would start on the south end of the UCLA campus at Westwood Boulevard at Circle Drive. It would be elevated until just before Weyburn and Gayley avenues, where it would dip to ground level and head west on Weyburn.
At Wilshire Boulevard, it is elevated again and stays above ground, west of Veteran. At Sepulveda, the path splits, with one elevated leg heading south down the center of Sepulveda Boulevard until it ends south of Santa Monica Boulevard. The other leg crosses the San Diego Freeway and enters Veterans Administration property, where it dips down to street level until it ends as San Vicente Boulevard turns west, north of Wilshire.
The hearing is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the UCLA Faculty Center’s California Room. Access is through the Westholme Avenue entrance to campus.
