22-1 Long Shot Wins Melbourne Cup

MELBOURNE, Australia — Outsider Tawrrific burst from the pack over the last 200 yards today to win the $1.5-million Melbourne Cup, Australia’s richest horse race.
Tawrrific, trained by Lee Freedman and ridden by New Zealand’s Shane Dye, won by 2 1/2 lengths from stablemate Super Impose, ridden by Darren Gauci.
Kudz was third of the 23 runners over the 3,200-meter Flemington course.
Tawrrific started at 22 to 1.
He was timed at 3 minutes 17.1 seconds, the fastest time in the history of the race.
