San Diego
Mother Butterbreast, otherwise known as KFMB radio personality Joe Bauer, was named the winner Wednesday in the “honorary mayor” fund-raising election sponsored by the Assn. of Retarded Citizens of San Diego.
Bauer edged out rival radio personality Roger Hedgecock, the former real mayor of San Diego, with 7,892 votes to Hedgecock’s 6,617. San Diegans were asked to donate $1 for each vote tabulated.
A total of $15,417 was raised. It will go toward programs for the retarded in San Diego, including Eggie’s restaurant on University Avenue in North Park, where Wednesday’s announcement was made. Eggie’s is owned and operated by mentally impaired people who are clients of the Assn. of Retarded citizens.
ARC officials said that Hedgecock was the early leader in the race but that Bauer pulled ahead at the finish. Other candidates were San Diego Union columnist Michael Grant (641 votes) and traffic reporter Monica Zech (282 votes).
