TENNIS ROUNDUP : McEnroe Howls Past Davis, 6-3, 6-3
As usual, John McEnroe made some noise and won a match.
The top-seeded McEnroe battled with officials Wednesday night while scoring a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Scott Davis to reach the second round of a $440,000 Grand Prix tournament at Wembley, England.
“Everything went well until the end,” McEnroe said. “I lost my cool. It would have been nice to finish it off in a quiet manner.”
McEnroe had a 5-1 lead in the second set when Davis saved four match points while holding serve. Suddenly, the temperamental McEnroe lost control.
Disputing line calls with umpire John Frame and the line judges, McEnroe lost his serve at love on a pair of double-faults to make it 5-3.
After slashing his racket on the ground, McEnroe broke Davis’ serve, winning on his fifth match point with a simple overhead shot.

Top-seeded Ivan Lendl, playing his first match in Stockholm, Sweden, since 1978, overcame some early problems to beat Mikael Pernfors of Sweden, 6-3, 6-2, in the Stockholm Open.
“It’s always difficult to play in a new arena,” said Lendl, who has not lost a set in three matches against Pernfors, former NCAA champion at University of Georgia.
“My timing was off in the beginning, but I was lucky. Once I was ahead it was easier to play.”
Lendl, who lost in the second round as a junior here 11 years ago, also had problems with the lights in the new Globe Arena, the highest domed building in the world.
