CALIFORNIA IN BRIEF : TRUCKEE : 2 Arrested in Scam to Defraud Elderly
Two Nevada women were arrested on suspicion of forging checks to steal money from elderly victims, Nevada County sheriff’s deputies said. Helen Williams, 53, and Dora Williams, 31, were held in the Nevada County Jail in lieu of $500,000 bail each on charges of forgery and criminal conspiracy, Sgt. Ron Perea said. Sheriff’s Investigator Kevin Harper said the women set up conservatorships to manage money for an unknown number of elderly people. The women then allegedly altered checks given to them by victims, he said. “In one instance, a check originally written for $10,000 to the conservator wound up as a $20,000 check,” Harper said.
