Sooners Drop Lewis, Three Others for Year
Tailback Ike Lewis of Oklahoma and three other players were suspended for the rest of the football season for violating team rules, Coach Gary Gibbs said Friday.
Also suspended were Fred McCline, a reserve defensive back; Reggie Finch, a redshirt running back, and Corey Mayfield, an injured linebacker.
Gibbs would not reveal the reason for the suspension, but Neal Stone, campus police chief, said the four were detained by officers late Wednesday after their car had been observed moving in a university apartment complex without its lights on. A search of the car revealed beer and some auto trim parts.
No charges were filed against the athletes, who were not arrested, and the matter is still under investigation.
Dewell Brewer, a freshman, is expected to start in place of Lewis in today’s game against Kansas State. Lewis had rushed for 558 yards in 92 carries since he became a starter when Mike Gaddis suffered a knee injury.
