County supervisors will be asked Tuesday to approve a plan that would see an increase of 18 daily flights at John Wayne Airport, to take effect when the airport’s new $50-million passenger terminal opens in April.
The plan would enable American Airlines to retain its dominance at the airport and would make bargain-based Midway Airlines the newest carrier with two flights a day. The added flights are part of an airport expansion plan that will permit as many as 33% more flights by noisier aircraft. The plan also would abolish limits on the number of hourly flights during peak travel times.
American Airlines would be allowed to increase the number of its noise-regulated flights from 19 to 21. The 10% increase would keep American far ahead in number of flights of the other airlines using the airport.
The plan was given preliminary approval Wednesday by the Orange County Airport Commission. The Board of Supervisors meets at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday in the first-floor board hearing room at Robert E. Thomas Hall of Administration, 10 Civic Center Plaza, Santa Ana.
