Council Approves Custom Blazers After Imposing Tax
MUSKEGON HEIGHTS, Mich. — City council members have voted to buy $250 custom-tailored blazers for themselves and top city administrators to wear at meetings and official functions, just three months after convincing voters an income tax was needed to offset a cash crunch.
The council voted unanimously this week to have 10 blazers made--one for each of the seven members plus one each for the city manager, city attorney and city clerk.
A telephone survey by the local newspaper found no other local government officials have chosen to buy special clothing.
The council formed a committee earlier this fall to review possible blazer designs at the suggestion of Mayor Pro Tem Eugene Fisher.
Black fabric was selected and members will have their pick of either single or double-breasted styles.
The city’s income tax, which will levy 1% on residents’ income and a 0.5% for non-residents, goes into effect Jan. 1.
Mayor Robert Warren said the council in the past had custom-made garments.
