Nation IN BRIEF : WASHINGTON STATE : Civil Rights Figure Has Heart Surgery

Arthur A. Fletcher, President Bush’s choice to head the U.S. Civil Rights Commission, was in satisfactory condition following triple-bypass heart surgery in Yakima. A nursing supervisor at St. Elizabeth Medical Center said Fletcher, 64, remained in the intensive-care unit. The operation was performed a week after Fletcher suffered a mild heart attack while in town for a conference.
