HIGH SCHOOL PLAYOFF ROUNDUP : Girls’ Volleyball
Poway defeated Monte Vista, 15-0, 15-4, 15-8, in the San Diego Section Division I quarterfinals. No. 1 Poway (29-0) will play San Dieguito (28-6) in the semifinals Wednesday. San Dieguito defeated Point Loma, 15-13, 15-4, 9-15, 15-5. Paige Strayer had 11 kills and Lea Gregor had seven for the Mustangs.
Torrey Pines defeated Mt. Carmel, 15-12, 15-10, 15-10. Amy Peters had 11 kills and Christy Peters had 10 for No. 2 Torrey Pines (22-2).
In the semifinals, Torrey Pines will play Helix, which defeated Bonita Vista, 15-13, 6-15, 9-15, 16-14, 15-3.
Water Polo
Coronado, defending San Diego Section champions the past two years, defeated Crawford, 32-1, in the first round of the water polo playoffs. Coronado (23-3) was led by Tom Mitchell with seven goals and Chris Cote with six.
Coronado will play Vista (13-11) in the quarterfinals Tuesday. Vista defeated Fallbrook, 15-14, in sudden death overtime.
USDHS, led by Brian Clemmons with eight goals, defeated Army-Navy, 20-6. Graham Freer added four goals for USDHS (16-2). USDHS will play Monte Vista (15-4), which defeated La Jolla, 13-5. Mike Poulson had five goals for Monte Vista.
Chuck Snay and Chad Aronen each had eight goals in Poway’s 35-9 victory over Mar Vista. Poway (23-2) will play Mira Mesa (17-6-1), which defeated Mt. Carmel, 12-11.
Mike McLean scored five goals and Danny Kolker scored three in Valhalla’s 24-8 victory over San Pasqual (16-7). Valhalla (21-3) will play Mt. Miguel (14-6-1), which defeated Bonita Vista, 11-9.
