73 Passes Not Enough to Win for N.C. State
DURHAM, N.C. — North Carolina State’s Shane Montgomery threw everything he had at Duke, attempting an NCAA-record 73 passes, but the No. 22-ranked Wolfpack lost to Duke, 35-26, Saturday.
The former record was 71 passes, set by Sandy Schwabe of Northwestern in 1982. Montgomery completed 37 for 535 yards and a touchdown.
Duke’s Clarkston Hines caught two of Dave Brown’s four touchdown passes to tie an NCAA career record of 35 touchdown receptions. Terance Mathis of New Mexico also has 35 touchdown catches.
Duke is 7-3 overall, 5-1 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. N.C. State is 7-3 and 4-3.
