Nation IN BRIEF : NEW YORK : Funding for Indian Colleges Criticized
Colleges run by Indian tribes have inadequate salaries and libraries and often operate out of trailers because of eroding federal support, according to a new study. U.S. support for the 24 colleges serving some 4,400 Indian students has been “woefully insufficient,” concluded “Tribal Colleges: Shaping the Future of Native Americans,” by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching in New York. Eleven years ago, Congress authorized the government to provide $4,000 for each full-time student at tribal colleges and a lesser amount for part-time students. The authorized grant per student was later increased to $5,825, but actual appropriations never approached those figures, the report said.
