3 Americans Win Rounds in S. Africa Open
JOHANNESBURG, South Africa — Unseeded Americans Robert Van’t Hof, Richey Reneberg and Joey Rive scored first-round victories today in the South African Open tennis tournament.
Van’t Hof was leading fourth-seeded Paolo Cane, 6-3, 2-0, when the Italian retired from the match.
Reneberg beat South African Pieter Aldrich, 7-6 (7-4), 6-2, and Rive defeated West German Alexander Mronz, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4.
The International Olympic Committee confirmed Monday that any players competing in the event would be barred from the 1992 Games.
There were 22 foreigners entered in the tournament. Most are not ranked in the world’s top 100. Only a handful, including Britain’s Jeremy Bates, would have been considered Olympic candidates.
