NATION IN BRIEF : FLORIDA : Jurors Sworn In for Officer’s Trial
A jury was sworn in to hear the manslaughter case against a Miami police officer accused of shooting a black motorcyclist, sparking three days of rioting in January. Dade Circuit Judge Joseph Farina dismissed last-minute defense appeals to move the trial and scheduled opening arguments for today. The jury of two blacks, one Latino and three non-Latino whites will decide the case against William Lozano, who fatally shot Clement Lloyd, 23, as the motorcyclist sped away from another officer. Lloyd’s passenger, Allan Blanchard, 24, died of injuries suffered when the motorcycle crashed. Lozano faces two manslaughter counts for the deaths. In the subsequent racial violence, one person was killed, 11 were wounded by gunfire and 13 buildings were burned down. The jury will be sequestered during the trial.
