SOUTHERN SECTION GIRLS’ TENNIS PLAYOFFS : Corona Del Mar Wins, Advances to Semifinals
Keri Phebus swept in singles, 6-1, 6-2, 6-0, to lead host Corona del Mar to a 14-4 victory over Los Angeles Westlake on Tuesday in a Southern Section 4-A girls’ quarterfinal tennis match.
Corona del Mar (20-1) also swept two doubles matches. Kristen Pollock and Jackie O’Leary won, 6-1, 6-2, 6-3, and Caren Manchester and Michele McFarland won, 6-2, 6-1, 6-1. Corona del Mar plays Estancia in Thursday’s semifinals.
In another Southern Section 4-A girls’ tennis match:
Estancia 10, Rolling Hills 8--The match was tied, 6-6, going into the final round of sets when the Eagles’ No. 3 singles player, Shannon Curren, won, 7-5, and their No. 3 doubles team of Kim Noh and Kelly Kreisle won, 6-4. Dina Birch swept her singles match, 6-0, 6-0, 6-1, for host Estancia (17-6).
In Southern Section 3-A girls’ tennis:
Capistrano Valley 12, Laguna Hills 6--Host Capistrano Valley swept in doubles to advance to the semifinal round on Thursday against Calabasas. Pam Berning and Allison Light won, 6-1, 6-0, 6-0; Angela Arias and Lisa Shulga won, 6-1, 6-1, 6-4, and Cori Emmons and Tauna Schweinberg won, 7-5, 6-0, 6-4. Page Bartelt also won, 6-1, 6-0, 6-1, in singles for Capistrano Valley (19-1).
In Southern Section 2-A girls’ tennis:
St. Lucy’s 11, Rosary 7--St. Lucy’s of Glendora (19-0) won six of nine singles sets at Rosary. Rosary finished the year 18-4.
Katella 13, Louisville 5--Lynn Vonusa won, 6-1, 6-2, 6-0, and Alishia Michaels won, 6-1, 7-6, 6-1, as Katella (17-4) upset No. 3-seeded Louisville of Woodland Hills at the Studio City Golf and Tennis Club.
