ON THE SIDELINES : Braves Waive Injured Sutter
ATLANTA — Veteran reliever Bruce Sutter was waived by the Atlanta Braves on Tuesday, as shoulder injuries sidelined his chance at becoming the top closer in major league history.
He is third on major league baseball’s all-time save list with 300.
“It’s obvious he can’t pitch anymore. He’s not going to try to pitch anymore. It’s just the end of the line,” said Braves assistant General Manager John Mullen, who signed Sutter to a six-year, $10.4-million contract in 1985.
Sutter unofficially announced his retirement in March after a complete rotator cuff tear was found in his right shoulder. He had surgery on a partial tear in 1986.
Arm problems kept Sutter on the disabled list all of the 1989 season, as well as most of the 1986 and 1987 seasons. He has a career ERA of 2.84.
