“Who Framed Roger Rabbit” bounded up another rung, to No. 2 on the Billboard magazine rental chart and may just spring into top spot next week. “Say Anything,” starring Ione Skye and John Cusack, was a critical hit and did good box-office business--$20 million. Look for this romantic comedy, which entered the chart at No. 14, to be one of the holiday hits, especially in the teen rental market. Most adults cringe at klutzy but earnest Ernest, the character popularized by Jim Varney, but kids love him. They’ll probably be urging parents to rent “Ernest Saves Christmas,” which quietly grossed $28 million in theaters. It debuted at No. 32 but its great seasonal rental appeal should boost it into the Top 10.

* Two of the “Three Fugitives” being chased by the cops in this comic adventure are played by Nick Nolte and Martin Short. Fans loved the chemistry between the stars and the third fugitive--an adorable little girl--to the tune of a $40-million theatrical gross. It entered the rental chart at a lofty No. 10 and has definite Top Five potential.
