Covert Policy

“All that is necessary for evil to triumph in the world is for good men to do nothing.” Thanks to The Times, we now know that it is once again U.S. policy to employ assassination as an instrument of foreign policy (“The Perils of Covert Policy: Snares and Seductions,” by Thomas Powers, Opinion, Oct. 29). That is, people whom we elect to govern deliberately plan to assassinate those whose policy offends us.

I find all of this very frightening. How many of our representatives will openly condemn this criminal conduct, for which Congress as well as President Bush are responsible? How many citizens who read that column will feel obliged to protest? It’s getting pretty late in the day.
