Nicaragua and Contras Recess Talks on Truce
WASHINGTON — Negotiations broke off Wednesday between Nicaragua’s Sandinista government and the resistance forces after six days of discussions in which the two sides were unable to reach agreement on restoring a cease-fire.
The recess was requested by Contra delegates, who asked that the sessions be resumed in Guatemala at an unspecified future date. Contra spokesman Bosco Matamoros said no arrangements have been reached with the Guatemalan government to continue the talks in that country.
Paul Reichler, an American attorney who represents the Sandinista government, charged that the Contras had “broken off” the negotiations when there appeared to be a genuine chance for success.
The talks, which began last Thursday in New York and moved to Washington over the weekend, were convened by the International Commission for Support and Verification after Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega suspended a 19-month cease-fire agreement.
