Right-Hander Schulze Is Released by Padres

The Padres released right-handed pitcher Don Schulze, 27, Wednesday. Schulze was acquired along with third baseman Mike Pagliarulo on July 22 from the New York Yankees in exchange for right-handed starter Walt Terrell.

Schulze was 2-1 with a 5.55 ERA and allowed 38 hits in just 24 1/3 innings, yielding a .352 batting average. Schulze has pitched for five different major-league teams in the past six years and a total of 13 different teams in his 10-year professional career.

BASKETBALL

Athletes in Action returns to San Diego for the first time since moving to Cincinnati last spring with a game at the University of San Diego tonight at 7:30.

AIA, with new co-coaches Lorenzo Romar and David Lower, was 2-8 after Wednesday’s 102-89 loss at UCLA. AIA defeated UC Santa Barbara, 85-81, Tuesday. The Toreros defeated Eastside Melbourne of Australia, 91-81, two weeks ago.

Returning starters for AIA include former San Diego State standout Zack Jones, UCLA star Rod Foster, guard Romar and center Gib Hinz. AIA leads the series, 4-1, and defeated USD, 97-90, last season.

San Diego State Coach Jim Brandenburg will get his first look at the 1989-90 Aztecs in action against Das Delft of Holland tonight in an exhibition at Peterson Gym at 7:30.

Just one starter, guard Michael Best, and four others return for the Aztecs from last year’s 12-17 team. SDSU has eight newcomers, including six community college transfers. This is also the college debut of Torrey Pines’ Courtie Miller, The Times’ section player of the year last season.

The University of San Diego women’s basketball team announced the signing of Jill Shaver and Melissa Sortino to national letters of intent. Sortino, a 5-7 senior guard from Marina High in Huntington Beach, averaged 20.3 points, 4.4 rebounds and 2.3 assists.

Shaver, a 6-1 forward from El Dorado High in Albuquerque, averaged 23.8 points and 9.2 rebounds. She led El Dorado to an undefeated season and the 4-A New Mexico state championship.

GOLF

US International’s Yuri Meada shot a first-round 74 to take the lead in USIU Women’s Intercollegiate Golf Invitational at the Rancho Bernardo Inn. Meada, a senior from Captain Cook, Hawaii, leads TCU’s Kelly Paul and New Mexico State’s A.J. Nealy by one stroke. San Diego State’s Wendy Kaupp and USIU’s Kim Millies shot 79s.

USIU is second in the team standings, 10 strokes behind Texas Christian University.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

The University of San Diego lost its 19th consecutive game to host U.S. International, 7-15, 15-3, 15-9, 15-7. Heather Kelley led USIU (4-16) with 20 kills, Angie Rais had 10 to lead USD (1-26).
