SATURDAY’S HEROES
Following are last week’s top collegiate football performances by South Bay high school graduates: Fred Gatlin, Nevada-Reno, freshman: The former Carson quarterback completed 23 of 30 passes with no interceptions for 323 yards and three touchdowns in a 45-7 win over Nevada-Las Vegas. Gatlin, who played less than three quarters, was selected Big Sky Conference Co-Player of the Week.
Treamelle Taylor, Nevada-Reno, junior: The former Hawthorne wide receiver had seven catches for 84 yards, including a 43-yard touchdown, and returned a punt 74 yards for a TD in the Wolf Pack’s victory. Taylor, with 55 catches, is eight shy of the school season record heading into Reno’s last game against Northern Arizona.
Mike Ford, UC Berkeley, senior: The former San Pedro wide receiver had five catches for 90 yards, including a five-yard touchdown, in a 38-26 upset over Washington State.
Dan Speltz, Cal State Fullerton, senior: The former Rolling Hills quarterback completed 15 of 24 passes for 233 yards and three touchdowns in a 31-13 win over Cal State Long Beach to become the school career leader in passing yards (4,390) and completions (334).
Leroy Holt, USC, senior: The former Banning fullback rushed 15 times for 70 yards and scored on a one-yard plunge in a 24-3 win over Arizona that clinched a third consecutive Pac-10 title for the Trojans.
Steven Williams, Illinois, senior: The former Serra wide receiver had five catches for 55 yards in a 24-10 loss to Michigan.
Pee Wee Smith, Miami, senior: The former Gardena wide receiver had three catches for 12 yards in a 24-3 win over Pittsburgh.
