ON THE SIDELINES : Jets Deny Interest in Spurrier
HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. — New York Jets President Steve Gutman insists there is no truth to the published reports that said the Jets are interested in Duke Coach Steve Spurrier as a replacement for Joe Walton.
“There’s no reason to speculate on anything,” Gutman said Wednesday. “I mean, Spurrier? It’s a great surprise.”
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution and the Raleigh News and Observer reported that the Jets and Atlanta Falcons are conducting a routine background check on Spurrier.
That’s nonsense, according to Gutman.
Spurrier said he has not been contacted by any NFL teams, but said he would be willing to listen to offers after the season.
