A Philharmonic Play-by-Play: Thirteen concerts from the Los Angeles Philharmonic’s current season will be packaged for broadcast in a co-venture between the Philharmonic and National Public Radio. KCRW-FM (88.9) will start airing the concerts next July (on Friday mornings). Gail Eichenthal (host/executive producer) and Joseph Magee (audio producer), who have collaborated in past seasons on prize-winning Philharmonic broadcasts, will work together again on the new programs. The series will include the first concert of Esa-Pekka Salonen, music director-designate of the Philharmonic. NPR, which will begin taping the new concerts next month, will distribute them to member stations around the country. KUSC-FM’s present series of taped broadcasts by the Los Angeles orchestra will end in December when NPR starts its taping. KCRW, licensed to Santa Monica College, is NPR’s flagship station here.
