PREP VOLLEYBALL : Mira Costa Girls Win 5-A Championship
Top-seeded Mira Costa defeated second-seeded Corona del Mar Saturday night at Marina High, 15-5, 13-15, 15-10, 15-13, to win the Southern Section girls 5-A volleyball title and qualify for the State tournament.
Corona del Mar (22-2), whose only losses have been to Mira Costa (23-0), should also qualify for the tournament.
In the 4-A Division, Royal easily defeated Esperanza, 15-13, 15-4, 15-3. Top-seeded La Habra won its first title, defeating Agoura in the 3-A final, 9-15, 16-14, 15-12, 10-15, 15-7.
In a battle of Northern League rivals, San Luis Obispo avenged its only two losses of the season by defeating Arroyo Grande in the 2-A finals, 15-5, 15-11, 15-16, 15-8.
Second-seeded Brentwood defeated top-seeded St. Anthony to win the 1-A championship, 9-15, 15-5, 15-13, 15-1.
Top-seeded Chadwick put an end to the title hopes of Mayfield, the No. 3 team in the Prep League, by defeating the Cubs, 15-8, 15-9, 15-3.
In the City Girls finals at the Wooden Center at UCLA, Palisades defeated Chatsworth, 16-14, 15-9, 15-9 to win the 4-A Division championship. It was the Dolphins’ seventh title in the last eight years. Garfield defended its 3-A title by defeating Birmingham, 15-13, 15-9, 15-9.
