SHORT TAKES : 8 Soviet Filmmakers Get Visas
PORTLAND, Ore. — Eight Soviet filmmakers have received entry visas to the United States to co-produce a documentary in the Northwest about aviation pioneer Igor Sikorsky, aides to Sen. Bob Packwood (R-Ore.) said Saturday.
Sikorsky developed the P-47 Thunderbolt and an early helicopter. The project will be co-produced by Oregon Public Broadcasting and some of the filming will take place at Boeing Co. facilities in the Seattle area, Packwood said.
The State Department had concerns about the project for national security reasons. Boeing produces military aircraft, as well as commercial air carriers.
But those concerns “are outweighed by the wonderful opportunity for cultural exchange this documentary filmmaking will provide,” Packwood said.
