P.M. BRIEFING : U.S. Prods Japan on E. Europe

TOKYO — The United States expects Japan to join fully in international efforts to support Eastern European economies, U.S. Ambassador to Japan Michael Armacost said today.
“I hope Japan will join the efforts with typical generosity and farsightedness,” he said in a speech to Japanese businessmen and academics.
Japan has been slow to give details of its plans of economic help for Poland, Hungary and other Eastern European nations, partly because of inter-departmental squabbling over the shape of next year’s budget.
