3 Bomb Blasts Rock Chile; Rebel Killed
SANTIAGO, Chile — Bomb blasts hit two Australian companies, and a suspected leftist rebel was killed when a bomb he was carrying exploded, police said Thursday.
The rebel died when the bomb went off in his hands in a northern working-class district late Wednesday. A man accompanying him was injured.
Another blast damaged offices of the Chilean Telephone Co., in which Australian magnate Alan Bond holds a controlling stake.
Offices of the Australian Thomas Nationwide Transport company were also hit by an explosion. The company, which holds interests in two Chilean airlines and a trucking company, has been accused by unions of seeking to monopolize the freight transportation system.
