UCSD Loses Fifth-Place Water Polo Game
A poor third period doomed UC San Diego in the fifth-place game of the NCAA championships in Indianapolis on Sunday as the Tritons lost to Cal State Long Beach, 10-5.
UCSD trailed by only a goal at halftime, 3-2, but by the end of the third period Long Beach had opened an 8-3 lead. Todd Sells led UCSD (21-14) with three goals, and Jason Brown and Jason Vance added one apiece.
Mike Burke led Long Beach (20-9) with five goals.
WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL
San Diego State will open the Northwest Region NCAA volleyball playoffs Thursday at Cal State Long Beach at 7:30 p.m.
The Aztecs (19-17) are unranked and seeded sixth. Long Beach (27-5) is seeded third and is ranked fourth in the nation. Both SDSU and Long Beach were selected as at-large teams. The No. 1 seeded team in the region is Hawaii. There is a 32-team field for the NCAA tournament.
MEN’S BASKETBALL
U.S. International University men’s basketball team plays host to undefeated Sonoma State tonight at 7:30 at Golden Hall.
Sonoma State (2-0) defeated Point Loma Nazarene, 84-74, Saturday. The Cossacks, who reached the NCAA Division II tournament last year, are led by Todd Blakely, a transfer from Santa Rosa Community College, who is averaging 22 points a game.
USIU (1-0) opened the season with an 87-83 victory over Drake. The Gulls were led by Kevin Bradshaw’s 38 points. After Sonoma State, USIU plays at Oklahoma on Wednesday.
