COUNTYWIDE : Police Plan Hiring Tests at El Toro Base
The Los Angeles Police Department will try to fill some of its 900 openings by scheduling hiring exams at the El Toro Marine Corps Air Station and other military bases, a personnel director said.
The written test, which gauges a potential candidate’s general knowledge, will be given at Camp Pendleton in Oceanside and at the El Toro Marine Corps Air Station on Dec. 12, LAPD senior personnel analyst Rhonda Lewis said.
The LAPD has recruited at military bases but only by leaving literature. This year the department has begun giving tests on the bases. The LAPD recently staged a recruiting drive at the Ft. Irwin Army Base in Barstow.
The department hopes to fill 514 new slots and an estimated 386 openings triggered by attrition, Lewis said.
Military personnel are attractive as potential LAPD candidates because “they have some of the same basic training” officers receive, Lewis said.
The department will give the tests to those scheduled to leave the military within six months, Lewis said.
