P.M. BRIEFING : Toyota U.S. Engine Plant Opens

Toyota Motor Corp. said the first phase of its $1.1-billion engine production facilities in Georgetown, Ky., went into operation today.

The No. 1 Japanese car maker said the $300-million first phase, which includes assembly of four-cylinder engines, started operations on one shift with a second shift to be added next spring.

Machining of major engine and axle components, as well as axle assembly will be added in Phase II, scheduled to begin in the fall of 1990, the company said.
