WOMEN’S ROUNDUP : CS Long Beach Finishes Cold and Gets Passed by Texas, 80-77
Cal State Long Beach State committed 19 turnovers and went scoreless for the final 3:16 as Texas rallied from an eight-point deficit to beat the 49ers, 80-77, Saturday night in a nonconference game at Texas.
With the 49ers ahead, 77-69, the Longhorns’ Amy Claborn made two free throws to cut the deficit to six. Guard Edna Campbell then stole an inbounds pass and scored to cut the lead to 77-73 with 44 seconds left.
After the 49ers’ Penny Moore missed a free-throw, Texas’ Lissa McBride made a three-pointer to close to within one.
Long Beach was called for a charge, and McBride made two free throws to give Texas the lead.
Campbell led No. 11 Texas (2-1) with 20 points. Four Longhorns were in double figures.
No. 7 Long Beach (2-1) was led by junior forward Lisa Reslock, who had a career-high 18 points.
Utah 65, UCLA 43--Outplaying the Bruins in every aspect of the game, the Utes had little trouble winning the Lady Ute tournament championship at Utah.
Leading, 14-11, with six minutes left in the first half, the Utes went on a 17-6 run that put them ahead, 40-27, at the intermission.
The Utes outrebounded the Bruins, 40-27.
Kristi Smith led the Utes (4-0) with 25 points.
UCLA was led by Rehema Stephens, who had 14 points and seven rebounds. The Bruins are 3-1.
USC 73, San Diego St. 66--The Trojans improved their record to 2-0 under new Coach Marianne Stanley as they beat the Aztecs in a nonconference game at USC.
The Trojans, who had three players in double figures, were led by senior forwards Tammy Hammond, with 24 points and 10 rebounds, and Rosalind Hodge, with 13 points and 14 rebounds.
The Aztecs (0-3) got 24 points and 10 rebounds from Julie Evans.
