Batt Scores 35 to Power UCSD Past San Bernardino
Rick Batt scored a game-high 35 points as UC San Diego defeated Cal State San Bernardino, 91-75, in the third-place game of the University of Redlands basketball tournament.
Batt, a 6-foot-7 sophomore forward, made 15 of 18 field goal attempts, one short of the school record. Tim Rapp, UCSD’s leading scorer averaging 25 points a game, scored 18.
Ron Bettiga led San Bernardino (3-3) with 18 points. UCSD is 5-2.
Ron Hubbard had 36 points, but it wasn’t enough as Point Loma Nazarene lost at Claremont-Mudd, 97-78.
Tim Foley (13 points), Brian Thurston (12) and Mike Flores (11) all reached double figures for Point Loma Nazarene (1-4).
Chris Green led Claremont-Mudd (4-2) with 26 points. Green was nine for 11 from the field and eight for nine from three-point range. Green made his first eight three-point shots. Henry Albrecht had 22 points and 13 rebounds.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Four players scored in double figures for the University of San Diego as the Toreros defeated Monmouth College (N.J.), 81-51, in the consolation game of the L’Eggs Classic at New Mexico State.
Candida Echeverria scored 11 points for USD and moved into second place on the school’s all-time career scoring list. Echeverria has 894 points, placing her behind current USD assistant coach Debby Theroux, who scored 1,010 from 1983-1986.
Chris Enger, a freshman from Vista, scored 16 points and had 13 rebounds and two blocked shots in just 24 minutes for USD (2-1). Rochelle Lightner added 11 and Lynda Jones 10.
Monmouth College is 1-4.
San Diego State dropped its third consecutive game, this time losing to host USC, 73-66. SDSU’s Julie Evans and USC’s Rosalind Hammond both had 24 points. Hammond had 14 rebounds. The Aztecs’ Crystal Lee had 18 points. USC (2-0) led, 34-30, at halftime.
MEN’S TENNIS
Jose Luis Noriega of the University of San Diego defeated USD teammate Chris Toomey, 6-4, 6-3, to win the men’s singles championship of the San Diego All-College tournament at USD.
Noriega and Toomey each advanced to the championship by winning semifinal matches earlier Saturday. Noriega defeated San Diego State’s Ricardo Herrera, 7-5, 6-3 in one semifinal, and Toomey took care of SDSU’s Tole Marinkovic, 3-6, 6-2, 6-1 in the other.
In the men’s doubles championship, Noriega and Toomey teamed to defeat Herrera-Marinkovic, 6-3, 6-4.
WOMEN’S SOCCER
National champion UC San Diego placed three players on the NCAA Division III women’s soccer All-American team.
Senior midfielder Felicia Faro, senior forward Heather Mauro and junior defender Toni Krumme were all named to the first team.
Named to the second team from UCSD were senior goalie Julie Friess, senior forward Theresa Schwarr and sophomore forward Katie Dulock.
WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL
Grossmont Community College advanced to the final of the California Community College state championships with two victories at Citrus College.
Grossmont struggled but eventually beat Cabrillo, 15-4, 9-15, 15-5, 15-12, then overwhelmed El Camino, 15-9, 15-7, 15-7. Suzy Schutz led the winners with 29 kills and five aces. Grossmont meets Cuesta College or DeAnza in the final today at 11:30 a.m.
