STATWATCH : Washington Just Misses Granada Hills Record
Granada Hills High’s poor performance in a 16-9 quarterfinal playoff loss to El Camino Real on Friday cost junior fullback Brett Washington a school record. Washington entered the game with 1,131 yards in 154 carries, an average of 7.3 yards a carry. Yet he rushed for only 25 yards in 12 carries against the Conquistadores, lowering his average to 6.96. The school record of 7.1 yards a carry was set in 1986 by Khalid Ali, who had 1,370 yards in 192 carries.
Washington should break some of Ali’s career marks next season, however. Washington, a two-year starter, has rushed for 21 touchdowns (Ali had 26) and 1,772 yards (Ali had 2,062).
Late-season improvement propelled Granada Hills quarterback Bryan Martin to a school passing mark. Martin, a junior, finished the season with two interceptions, one less than Jeremy Leach threw as a junior in 1986.
Martin completed 100 of 194 attempts for 1,414 yards and 14 touchdowns. Leach, in his junior season, completed 114 of 198 for 1,325 yards and 14 touchdowns.
Offense: Despite missing the first three games of the season because of injury, Canyon tailback Chris Peery rushed for 1,220 yards and 23 touchdowns in 181 carries (6.7 average). Peery also had 20 receptions for 232 yards and four touchdowns.
Canyon’s senior pass combination of quarterback Tim Beidle and wide receiver Clint Beauer was the Valley’s best. Beauer hauled in an area-high 75 passes for 1,235 yards and 13 touchdowns. Beidle completed 152 of 271 passes for 2,198 yards and 16 touchdowns.
Kennedy running back Ontiwaun Carter finished the season with 1,563 yards, tops in the area among City Section players. Last year as a sophomore, Carter gained 1,190 yards. He has a two-year total of 2,763 yards.
Basketball: Simi Valley is getting offensive balance from its three returning starters: Kenny Hood, Mike Wawryk and Steve Carnes. After three games, only nine points separate the top scorer from the No. 3 scorer. Wawryk has averaged 18 points for a total of 54. Hood has 52 and Carnes 45.
