NHL ROUNDUP : Lemieux Becomes Penguins’ Career Goal Leader
Mario Lemieux scored once to become the Pittsburgh Penguins’ all-time goal leader and extend his point-scoring streak to an NHL-best 16 games Wednesday night as the Penguins beat the Washington Capitals, 5-3, at Pittsburgh.
Lemieux scored his 317th career goal in his 327th regular season game, surpassing Jean Pronovost, who had 316 in 753 games from 1968-78.
Phil Bourque and John Cullen scored early in the third period to lead the Penguins to victory in Craig Patrick’s debut as coach.
New York Islanders 4, Hartford 3--Joe Reekie’s goal with 5:48 remaining capped a three-goal comeback as the Islanders won their fourth consecutive game by beating the Whalers at Hartford, Conn.
The Islanders tied the game at 8:22 of the final period when Brent Sutter took a pass from Jeff Norton and scored from the slot during a power play.
Winnipeg 4, Calgary 3--Laurie Boschman’s shorthanded goal midway through the third period at Calgary gave the Jets a victory over the Flames.
Brent Ashton, who had tied the game earlier in the third period, set up Boschman’s decisive shot.
Montreal 4, Minnesota 1--Patrick Roy made 33 saves as the Canadiens ended the North Stars’ eight-game home winning streak at Bloomington, Minn.
Chicago 6, Toronto 4--With 1:04 remaining, Jeremy Roenick’s second goal of the game broke a tie as the Blackhawks snapped a five-game losing streak with a victory over the Maple Leafs at Chicago.
New York Rangers 5, New Jersey 3--James Patrick scored twice and Bob Froese made 31 saves as the Rangers got three goals on their first five shots to beat the Devils at New York.
