Sheldon--’Free Agent for God’

In response to “A Savvy ‘Free Agent for God,’ ” Part A, Nov. 26:

Just whose traditional values does the Rev. Louis Sheldon represent? After 10 years of sermons from assorted religious storm troopers and bunco artists, one can only conclude that “traditional values” is too often a euphemism for mean-spirited pride in ignorance.

As future parents, we profoundly resent this vile little hysteric’s insistence that his campaign of fear and loathing represents the hope of the American family. As taxpayers, we further resent Sheldon’s efforts to institutionalize a religious ideology whose fundamental tenet is that of willful intolerance.

In his determination to brainwash children, squelch women and purge gays, the Rev. Lou brings to mind another zealot of the past decade. The Ayatollah Khomeini may at last be face-to-face with Allah, but his spirit lives on in Sheldon and all others who would trample personal and intellectual freedom in their rush to theocracy.
