Corona Beats Canyon Springs in Division V
CORONA — Keith Brockie recovered a bad center snap in the end zone in the second quarter to give Corona High School a 14-10 lead, and the Panthers rode that margin into their first Southern Section Division V football championship, beating Moreno Valley Canyon Springs Friday night.
Canyon Springs (12-2) opened up a 10-point lead in the first quarter on a 45-yard touchdown pass play from Kevin Gormont to Eric Zomalt and a 24-yard field goal by Richard Couch.
Corona (10-4) countered with 14 second-quarter points on six-yard touchdown pass from Steve Bernier to Gabe Rincon and Keith Brockie’s recovery.
The second half was dominated by the defenses.
Corona, the No. 3 team from the Mountain View League, lost earlier in the year to league runner-up Canyon Springs, 34-12. Corona defeated league champion Norco, 28-14, last week in the semifinals.
