P. M. BRIEFING : Hitachi Plans Plant in Georgia
TOKYO — Hitachi Ltd. plans to produce large color television picture tubes in Georgia, starting in the summer of 1991, the Nihon Keizai newspaper said today.
A company spokesman said Hitachi has yet to develop specific plans.
The report said Hitachi plans to build a $104-million plant to make 1 million TV picture tubes annually. The tubes will be used in Hitachi’s plant in Anaheim, Calif., and sold to other Japanese makers operating in the United States, including NEC Corp., Sanyo Electric Co., and Sharp Corp., the newspaper said. Hitachi also plans to export the tubes to Japan and Europe.
Hitachi’s Anaheim plant now uses picture tubes made in Japan and Singapore, the company said.
