Alberto Tomba, Italy’s No. 1 skier, will be sidelined for at least one month with a broken collarbone, doctors said in Bologna, Italy.
Tomba, 22, broke his left collarbone in a bad spill in a World Cup super-giant slalom in Val d’Isere, France, Sunday.
Giorgio Fontanesi, a doctor at the Rizzoli clinic where Tomba was hospitalized, said Tomba will not need surgery as originally feared.
Tomba’s personal trainer, Giorgio D’Urbano, said that the skier could return for World Cup slaloms Jan. 14 in Bad Wiessee, West Germany, or Jan. 21 in Kitzbuhel, Austria.
