THE SIDELINES : Racing Teams Dumps President
INDIANAPOLIS — John Coponigro has been dumped as president of Championship Auto Racing Teams by the owners and owner-representatives of Indy-car teams.
The owners voted Tuesday not to renew Caponigro’s contract, which expires Feb. 28. Caponigro, a Detroit-area attorney and sports agent, has held the post since March.
The owners selected Indy-car owner John Capels to fill the newly established post of executive vice president and chief operating officer. A search will continue for a successor for Caponigro, who could not be reached for comment.
Capels, a sprint-car driver turned Indy-car mechanic and team manager, will supervise all CART day-to-day operations.
