LAPD Captain Named Downey Police Chief
A Los Angeles Police Department captain has been named the new chief of the Downey Police Department.
D. Clayton Mayes, 47, a Downey resident, was approved for the job Tuesday night by the Downey City Council. Mayes, a former member of the Downey School Board, was selected over former Pomona Police Chief Richard M. Tefank, the runner-up of six finalists for the job. Mayes, who will be paid about $80,000 a year, replaces Chief Pete Stone, who retires Friday.
Mayes joined the LAPD as an officer in 1964 and has been a captain since July, 1979. He is the commanding officer of the department’s burglary/auto theft division, which has about 60 detectives and officers, department spokesmen said. He has a master’s degree in public administration.
