Trail Adds Beach Access in Santa Monica Mountains
A trail affording hikers and equestrians coastal access to approximately 65 miles of trails weaving through the Santa Monica Mountains will open Friday.
A dedication ceremony and guided one-mile hike and ride by the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy and Point Mugu State Park will celebrate the 11 a.m. opening at the Ray Miller Trailhead in La Jolla Canyon, about a mile south of Mugu Rock on U. S. Highway 1.
The trail meanders through the mountains along the La Jolla Ridge at no more than a 9% incline and connects with several other paths, including the newly created Backbone Trail, park officials said.
This large network of trails, traversing the “backbone” of the Santa Monica Mountains, stretches from Will Rogers State Historic Park in Pacific Palisades to Point Mugu State Park. Approximately 85% of the 65-mile Backbone Trail is completed, with the remaining 20 miles to be finished next year.
Point Mugu State Park covers 15,000 acres from Newbury Park to Malibu. For more information, call the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy at (213) 456-5046.
