Move over all you innovative football coaches. There is only one run-and-shoot offense in Ventura County this time of year.

Buena High runs and Jeff Oliver shoots.

Under Coach Glenn Hannah, the Bulldogs love to run. But never has it been this much fun.

Oliver, a three-year starter, scored a remarkable 123 points in three games last week, leaving a string of broken records in his wake.

The senior guard began the season somewhat innocuously, scoring 29 points in an easy 94-51 victory over Santa Ana last Wednesday in the first round of the Loyola tournament. Looks like Oliver is hot.

In a 120-90 win over St. Paul the next day, Oliver scored 42 points to break a school record that had stood 28 years. Don Fly scored 41 in 1961. Oliver also set a school mark with eight three-point baskets. Looks like Oliver is scalding.

Buena lost, 118-96, to Loyola the next day in the tournament final. But Oliver had the last word, scoring 52 points to tie a county record held by former Simi Valley High standout Don MacLean, who set the mark in 1988. Maybe Oliver is unconscious.

Oliver played shooting guard as a sophomore and switched to point guard last season. This year, he is still a point guard but the position clearly leaves him plenty of room for shooting.

And as his point total grows, so apparently does he. A local newspaper that listed Oliver as 5-foot-11 in preseason stories described him as 6-0 after his 42-point performance and 6-1 after he scored 52.

If he keeps up the pace, he might be playing center by Christmas.
