LOCAL : Man Shot by Westminster Police Hunting for Gang Suspects Dies
A man shot by a Westminster police officer died of his wounds, authorities said today. The man had pointed a handgun at officers who were searching for three suspects in a gang-related drive-by shooting, police said.
The Orange County district attorney’s office was investigating the incident today.
Police spokesman Tom Broderson said the fatal shooting occurred around 9:20 p.m. at Alcester Street and Sinclair Avenue, about three blocks north of a scene of a drive-by shooting 15 minutes earlier. Three alleged gang members had fired about 10 to 15 shots at five people standing in front of a residence in the 14000 block of Starsia Street, Broderson said.
He said the man confronted officers who were searching the neighborhood for the three suspects. “He pointed a handgun at officers who fired one shot,” Broderson said.
The slain suspect, whose name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin, was taken to Fountain Valley Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.
Broderson said he could not say whether the slain man was involved in the drive-by shooting.
