COLLEGE NOTES : Chapman’s Boyd Leaves Athletic Director’s Post
Bob Boyd has resigned as athletic director at Chapman College, the school announced Thursday.
Tom Snell, an assistant professor of accounting, has been named the interim athletic director, effective Jan. 1. Boyd will remain as the men’s basketball coach.
“When I accepted the position in August, I was unaware that serving as athletic director would take so much time away from my responsibilities as basketball coach,” Boyd said in a prepared statement.
Snell, who has been at Chapman since 1985, will be athletic director until the end of the school year.
Northern Arizona University kicker Micky Penaflor, a graduate of Fountain Valley High School, has been selected to play in two college all-star games, the school’s sports information department announced.
Penaflor, the Lumberjacks’ all-time leading kick-scorer with 242 points, will play in the Hula Bowl in Honolulu Jan. 13 and the King Classic in San Jose Jan. 15.
During his three-year varsity career, Penaflor made 48 of 60 field goals and 98 of 101 conversions.
Fred Whittingham, a Brigham Young University senior, has been chosen to the 1989 GTE Academic All-America university division football first team.
Whittingham, an El Modena High School graduate, has a 3.24 grade-point average and majors in psychology.
