Big Ben Silenced 3 Hours by Fault in Cogwheels

LONDON — The familiar chimes of Big Ben were silenced for three hours Friday by a mechanical fault that froze the hands of the 130-year-old London landmark at the Houses of Parliament.
A Department of the Environment spokeswoman said a problem with the clock’s cogwheels was to blame, and experts easily repaired the fault.
